About Us

The Shepherd's Crook, Crowell, Chinnor, Oxfordshire

The Shepherd’s Crook is a traditional British Free House set in an idyllic beautiful Oxfordshire country village. Not being tied to any single pub chain means that we offer a wide selection of the finest Beers, Ales, Wines and Spirits including locally brewed and independent products that you are less likely to find elsewhere. Of course, we also stock the national brands you know and love.

We are just as serious about the contents of our kitchen too. Wherever possible we use fresh locally sourced meat and produce to give you the finest flavours so that you can enjoy our full and varied menu knowing that you are supporting local agriculture and reduced long distance food haulage. Whether you choose to enjoy our wares inside the traditional village pub or on our terrace you are assured of a warm welcome and staff that will do all they can to make your visit perfect.

Great Food and Drink

We sell superior food, using wonderful local ingredients that are available to us here; a variety of great ales from independent breweries and a wine list that’s full of interesting wines that complement the food and ambience of the pub.

Great Atmosphere

Enjoy the summer on our large terrace facing the village green or sit at one of our tables on the green itself. Alternatively, on a cold winter’s evening, stay warm in our atmospheric pub and restaurant or relax in front of our log burner – all the while enjoying our seasonal menu, ales and wines.

Private Parties and Group Bookings

Perfect for parties and group bookings. The Shepherd’s Crook has several dedicated areas available for private hire. Enjoy an evening in the company of your favourite people, while we keep the food and drink flowing to your own private corner of the pub.

The village of Crowell is located just outside Chinnor near Thame in Oxfordshire. In an area designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Nestled close to the Chiltern Hills, this tiny village was mentioned in the Domesday Book although it’s history may go back further as it is located on ‘Britain’s oldest Road’, The Ridgeway (now a popular route for walking and cycling).

The Shepherd’s Crook sits beside Crowell’s village church, which itself dates back to 12th Century.

The area surrounding Crowell was chosen for a scheme to reintroduce the previously native Red Kite into the UK in the 1990’s, the scheme proved successful and these majestic birds are now an almost constant feature of the skies around Crowell.
